Wake Up, O Lord, and Rescue Me!

David’s Plea

It may seem audacious to make demands of the Lord.  However, King David did just that when he cried, Wake Up, O Lord and Rescue Me!

Wake up!  Rise up to help me!  My God and Lord, stand up for me.  Psalm 35:23

Lord, wake up!  Why are you sleeping?  Get up!  Don’t say no to us forever.  Psalm 44:23

Rise up, help me!  Look at what I’m up against.  Psalm 59:4b

Why is the Lord Still Sleeping?

Can’t you see David hovering over God as He lies asleep?  David shakes the Lord trying to awaken Him.  David’s need is urgent.  Why won’t God respond?

I can totally identify with David, especially when I’m facing a dire situation.  I need the Lord to come to my rescue.  From my perspective, I am out of options.  Time is of the essence.  Yet, why is He not responding?  How can God sleep at a time like this?  Doesn’t He know I need Him NOW!

Wake Up, O Lord, and Rescue Me!

In these psalms, David’s anxiety is increasing. Fear wants to consume him.  Yet, David pushes his feelings aside and shows great perseverance and confidence in God, his Savior.  David wasn’t going to allow a little cat nap to get in the way of his deliverance.  David knew God would rescue him and I too can be sure of rescue as well.

Heavenly Father, at times it seems like You are sleeping and leaving me to deal with crisis and confusion on my own.  I need to know You have not abandoned me.  Thank You for David’s example.  He was bold, determined, and confident that You would come through for him.  I desire the same.  Amen.

Questions to Consider:

  1. Have you ever felt that God was sleeping when you needed Him?  Explain.
  2. David’s confidence in God was based on his relationship with God.  How would you describe your relationship with God?
