Are you Standing on Holy Ground?

And the angel of the Lord appeared to Moses in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush.  He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed.  And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.”  When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!”  And he said, “Here I am.”  Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” Exodus 3:2-5

Embrace the Unexpected

I just returned from my first cruise, sailing from Boston, Massachusetts to Quebec City, Canada.  Unfortunately, because of health, Steve couldn’t make the trip.  However, I traveled with some dear friends whom Steve and I have known for over thirty-eight years.  As Steve and I were reviewing my itinerary before I left, I mentioned I had some long layovers.  Steve responded, “Don’t worry.  God will have someone for you to bless during those times.” His words proved to be true, although I was often the person blessed.  Time and again, I experienced burning bush moments. God used the unexpected to produce a conduit for camaraderie and joy during challenging circumstances.

Unfortunately, I am easily annoyed when well-thought-out plans go astray.  I feel inconvenienced and want to fix the problem.  However, on this trip, holy moments appeared in unexpected places and people.  Thankfully, just like Moses, I turned to see them and recognized I was standing on holy ground.

Inconvenience Leads to Blessing

Holy moments were found in the following:
Delayed flights unexpectantly resulted in connecting with friends and fellowshipping with abundant food and conversation.
Late Uber drivers led to meeting others also waiting for a ride.
Our group of three left an open bus seat next to me, where I was introduced to amazing people and stimulating discussion.
When our day plans fell through, God provided a stunningly beautiful adventure for us to enjoy.
Allowing others to serve me, also gave me opportunity to bless them.

My point is, we never know who we will encounter during times of unforeseen turbulence in our lives.  But instead of dreading the inconvenience, we need to embrace the challenge.  God has something special awaiting us.  Let’s be sure to recognize the burning bush by turning, looking, and saying, “Here I am.”  You may surprisingly be standing on holy ground, so take off your sandals and discover what awaits.

Thank you, Jesus, for this wonderful trip!  I thoroughly enjoyed Your beauty of your creation in scenery and people.  Amen.

Questions to Consider:

  1. What holy ground have you traveled today?
  2. Share a time when inconvenience resulted in an amazing blessing.
