A SOS Distress Call

Have you ever received a SOS distress call? I have the privilege of attending Bible Study with four Emergency Department nurses.  They have taught me that the emergency room faces unique challenges, in dealing with patient’s physical and emotional needs.  With skill and compassion, ER personnel respond to trauma in this ever-changing environment.  They have my deepest respect.

I Am in Trouble!

A SOS Distress Call is also found in Psalms 70:1 & 5.

God, hurry to rescue me.  Lord, hurry to help me!  I am oppressed and needy; hurry to me, God.  You are my help and my deliverer; Lord, do not delay.

Obviously, we do not know the circumstances surrounding the psalmist’s crisis, but this is urgent.  The psalmist is in trouble and begging the Lord to hurry.  Isn’t it interesting, that his SOS call is to God?  The psalmist knows that God will deliver him.

When facing trouble, who do I run to?  Ironically, I have three emergency contacts listed in my phone.  Is the God of heaven and earth, number four on my emergency call list?

Psalms 70 – A SOS Distress Call

Basically, Psalms 70:5 can be summed up this way:

I am in trouble

Come quickly

Deliver me

Don’t delay

Morris Code

SOS is an international Morris Code for distress.  It is an appeal for help.  Ironically, SOS stands for Save Our Souls.  How fitting!  God is in the soul-saving business.  Perhaps my first distress call should be to Him!

Dear Father, forgive me when I think of You as an after-thought.  May Your Name be ever on my lips, in good times and in times of trouble.  Amen.

Questions to Consider:

  1. Who do you automatically turn to when you are in trouble?
  2. Do you know that God will deliver you?  Explain why or why not.
