A Symphony of Grace

Have you ever considered your Christian walk to be a beautiful, melodic symphony?  Peter gives us a musical word picture in 2 Peter 1:5-8, in which God is orchestrating a symphony of grace.

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly affection; and to brotherly affection, love.  For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The melody in this musical composition is faith.  Once that melody is consistent and clear, the harmony can be added.

The Seven Movements in God’s Symphony

The harmony that Peter describes includes seven movements:  goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly affection, and finally love.

These seven movements in this symphony build upon one another.  In the Greek, the word add found in verse 5 means chorus or choreography.  We as Christ-followers need to continually grow and mature in these individual movements.  2 Peter 3:18 says But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

God’s sweet-sounding creation crescendos in its musical eloquence.  Its final movement is the grand finale of love.

God’s symphony of grace begins with faith and ends with love.  What a grace-filled masterpiece!

Thank you, Heavenly Father, that you want to create a symphony of grace in my life!  Just like a professional musician, may I diligently practice and work hard to produce a sweet-sounding offering to You.  Amen.

Questions to Consider:

  1. How do you make sure your melody if faith is heard?
  2. Which of these seven qualities in the harmony do you find most difficult to live out?
