Fan Into Flame Your Spiritual Gifts

Each of us has been given spiritual gifts for the purpose of building up and strengthening the body of Christ.  Do you know what your spiritual gifts are?  Can our gifts change over time?  I believe that in 2 Timothy 1:6-7, Paul was encouraging Timothy to develop his spiritual gifts.

For this reason, I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of love and power and self-control.

It Starts with a Spark

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are available to us all.  However, some of those gifts are just a tiny spark.  For example, think about a campfire.  A fire starts with a spark.  Often you need to blow on the spark for the fire to catch and spread.

Paul is encouraging Timothy to blow on the gifts he has been given.  Paul says to fan into flame.  It’s a process.  Timothy is challenged to use his gifts, practice them, and develop them, in order to create a flame.  Our gifts will get better as we use them.

Be Bold As You Flame Into Flame Your Spiritual Gifts

2 Timothy 1:7  says, God has not given us a spirit of fear…  Timothy was timid; but Paul was calling him to boldness.  By the power of the Holy Spirit, we become more confident and bolder as we develop our gifts.  We realize that the power isn’t us, but the Holy Spirit who resides in us.  And you shall relieve power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. Acts 1:8

Dear Jesus, thank you for my spiritual gifts.  Help me to recognize, use, and develop my gifts through the help of the Holy Spirit.  Give me power and boldness.  May I be amazed by what You are going to do through me!
