Give Me Eyes To See

Unfortunately, smokey skies are a familiar summer occurrence in Central Oregon.  The smoke is the result of wildfires in the area.  Throughout the day, the Air Quality Index (AQI) is updated, which measures unhealthy pollutants.  But in addition to health risks, smokey skies obstruct our vision.  The haze makes it difficult to see clearly. Granted, God routinely uses physical illustrations in His Word to describe our spiritual condition.  So, as I look out my window and see smoke, I wonder, am I spiritually blind to something that the Lord wants me to see clearly? God, give me eyes to see!

Spiritual Blindness

Saul, later called Paul, was a zealous Jew who persecuted Christians.  He could not spiritually understand that Jesus came to earth as Savior and King.  God dramatically opened Paul’s spiritual eyes by temporarily inflicting Paul with physical blindness. When Paul’s vision was restored, Jesus, the Righteous One, was revealed to Paul.  Suddenly, Paul saw the Lord with spiritual eyes and became a witness for Christ.

“As I was on my way and drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from heaven suddenly shone around me.  And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ’Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’  And I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’  And he said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.’  Now those who were with me saw the light but did not understand the voice of the one who was speaking to me.  And I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’  And the Lord said to me, ‘Rise, and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all that is appointed for you to do.’  And since I could not see because of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand by those who were with me and came into Damascus.”  (Acts 22:6-11)

Give Me Eyes to See

Jesus often spoke in parables which were shrouded in mystery and not easily understood.  The disciples asked Jesus why this was so in Mark 4:11-12. “And he said to them, ‘To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside, everything is in parables, so that they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand, lest they should turn and be forgiven.’”

Many are spiritually blind to the truth because they do not receive it in faith.

Dear Jesus, my Savior, give me eyes to see.  I know that I have hazy vision and am not clearly seeing all that you wish to reveal to me.  Help the smoke that obstructs my vision to dissipate.  I want to claim Luke 10:23 which says, Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.”

Questions to Consider:

  1. In what areas do you spiritually desire clearer vision?
  2. God has so much to reveal to us in His Word.  Ask the Lord to remove the smoke and give you eyes to see.
