God Hems My Frayed Edges

God Hems My Frayed Edges

You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.  Psalm 139:5

I recently purchased a new sewing basket.  My old sewing basket was tattered and beyond repair.  Yet, parting with it was hard because it held memories.  I have countless memories of using a needle and thread to secure the ribbons on our daughter’s ballet pointe shoes. I also remember mending rips on our son’s basketball jersey.

As I read this morning’s Bible verse, I’m reminded that God is also like a seamstress.  God Hems My Frayed Edges.  I am secure in Him.

Sewing a Hem

Hemming is a sewing technique that prevents fraying. It also adjusts the length of a garment.  A hem is a finished edge on fabric.  Tucking in the frayed edges creates a completed look.

As I think about this definition, I realize that I have many frayed edges.  If left unchecked, those frayed areas can eventually unravel a garment.  Likewise, they can unravel me.

God Hems My Frayed Edges

God is a master seamstress.  He gathers the frayed edges in my life and neatly tucks them into the hem of His love.  He is literally holding me together!

Because God hems me in, I am confident that He goes with me, before me, and behind me.    Isaiah 52:12b says, for the Lord will go before you, and the God of Israel will be your rear guard.

No Need to Fear

God’s love offers protection and security.  Because His hem surrounds me, I do not need to be afraid.  I can walk in confidence.  My life will not unravel because God Hems My Frayed Edges.

The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you.  Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.  Deuteronomy 31:8

Grabbing My Sewing Basket

Now as I pull out my sewing basket, it triggers another memory.  God is with me.  I am secure in the hem of God’s love.

Prayer

Thank you, Heavenly Father, that you are always with me.  Thank you for gathering my frayed edges and hemming them in your love.  Amen.

Questions to Consider:

  1. What frayed edges are you dealing with?
  2. Share a memory of God going with, before, and behind you, during a difficult situation.
