Keep Your Eyes on the Goal

In the book of Philippians, we’re presented with a race analogy, likely referencing the Greek Olympic Games.  When running, it’s important to to keep our eyes on the goal and not look back. Philippians 3:14 reads: I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

A Member of the Track Team

When I was in high school, I was a 400-meter runner.  However, when I first went out for the team, I didn’t realize I could run.  The coach grouped approximately ten of us together and tasked us with running 400 meters (once around the track).  Because I didn’t know how to pace myself, I ran alongside a seasoned 400-meter runner.  But when we had 100 meters left to go, I still had plenty of energy for a final push.  With my eyes on the goal, I sprinted past my running partner and crossed the finish line.  At that point, the coach knew I had the necessary combination of endurance and speed to compete in 400-meter events.

Track is a Team Sport

I discovered in track the importance of training with someone faster than myself.  As I strive to keep up, I am learning useful techniques to become a better runner. The same applies spiritually.  I want to surround myself with teammates who keep their eyes on the same goal, which is Jesus.  I learn from them as they push me to be bolder and encourage me to grow in intimacy with Jesus.

However, it’s a push and pull relationship.  In turn, I become a pacesetter for others.   As I continue to grow deeper in my faith journey, I need to help others do the same.  Sometimes, my role is to help pick up those who have been injured or have fallen behind in the race.  The point is, we do not run alone, but as a team, and each member of the team plays an important role.

Keep Your Eyes on the Goal

As a team, we keep our eyes on the prize.  The prize is Jesus.  United, we run toward Him with perseverance and determination.

Thank you, Jesus, for the people who have been my running partners over the years.  Likewise, help me encourage others in the race.  Thank you, that You are the prize!  Amen.

Questions to Consider:

  1. Who are your running partners?  What have you learned from them?
  2. What distracts you for keeping your eyes on the goal?
