Make Room for Holy Interruptions

Life isn’t going as planned lately.  However, I’m learning to hold my schedule lightly.  I’ve been surprised that often the unplanned circumstances of my day are special encounters with people and places that God has set in my path.  I must Make Room for Holy Interruptions.  Amazingly, these unexpected interruptions bring joy and recognition that God is directing my steps, even though I thought I was.

The Meaning of Interruption

An interruption breaks continuity or obstructs something.  Often that something is my will, my desires, and my schedule.  Me, myself and I, seem to be the theme here.  Perhaps the Lord is trying to change that focus.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your path straight.  Proverbs 3:5-6

Identifying Holy Interruptions

Surprisingly, Holy Interruptions are often disguised.  I don’t recognize their significance until after the encounters have occurred.  Initially, these unplanned events may seem annoying or inconvenient.

Some of my Holy Interruptions include:

A friend has a sudden health emergency.

My husband asks me to go on an impromptu road trip.

A stranger needs help.

A family member requires a short-term place to stay.

Make Room for Holy Interruptions

God is teaching me to Make Room for Holy Interruptions.  Amazingly, these sudden alterations to my daily schedule create dependency on the Lord, joy in serving others, and blessing to me.

We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.  Proverbs 16:9

Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:10

I know, O Lord, that a man’s way is not his own; no one who walks directs his own steps. Jeremiah 10:23

Prayer

Dear Lord, help me be available to your leading throughout my day.  May I respond with grace when my daily schedule goes sideways.  Help me Make Room for Holy Interruptions, knowing that you are in their midst.  Amen.

Questions to Consider:

  1. How do you respond to unplanned events in your day?  Are you flexible, annoyed, grateful, too busy?
  2. Share a time when you were exceedingly blessed by a Holy Interruption.
