My Lighthouse, A Symbol of Light, Security, and Hope

My husband, Steve, and I just returned from Oregon’s Central Coast, where the Pacific Ocean meets the rain forest in an amazing ecological configuration. The coastline is rugged, majestic, and ever-changing with the ebb and flow of the tide and the influence of the unpredictable sun.  During our stay, we visited Heceta Head Lighthouse, a famous icon whose light can be seen up to twenty-three miles, giving direction to wandering vessels at sea.  Looking at my surroundings, the analogy of Jesus as my lighthouse became clear to me. He is my refuge and place of safety. Jesus is my directional compass. His light penetrates the darkness. My Lighthouse, is a symbol of light, security, and hope.

A Lighthouse Provides Guidance

A lighthouse is a towering structure along the coastline with a series of lights, lenses, and beacons, which help illuminate the darkness and give direction to maritime vessels.  Importantly, lighthouses are a dependable and trustworthy source of guidance and safety to lost vessels.  They symbolize hope.

We are Lost and in Need of Rescue

We too can lose direction in life; sometimes without even knowing it.  Suddenly, we find ourselves in the depths of despair, in over our heads with no help in sight. It feels like we are sinking.  Desperation and fear overwhelm us.  We need help.  Who do we turn to?  We are looking for strength, security, hope, and direction.  Jesus wants to be our lighthouse.  He possesses all these attributes and so much more.

Jesus, My Lighthouse, A Symbol of Light, Security and Hope

Listen to the words in the following song, My Lighthouse.  https://youtu.be/HA8VtUPgqTc?si=77V2kSJJDmL2IVYH

I love thinking of Jesus as my lighthouse.  The image reminds me of the psalms.

Lord, I seek refuge in you…rescue and deliver me.  Be a rock of refuge for me, where I can always go.  Give the command to save me, for you are my rock and fortress.  Deliver me, my God.  Psalm 71:1-4

Granted, we all need rescue.  Thankfully, Jesus stands ready to come to our aid, because He is on a rescue mission.  We just need to turn to Him for guidance.  Therefore, the next time you see a lighthouse, be reminded that Jesus is your ultimate lighthouse and navigational compass.  You can rest in that assurance.

Thank you, Jesus, for being my lighthouse.  May I run to You to find safety, security and peace.  Amen.
