Oh That We Might Know the Lord
Recently, Steve and I enjoyed a front-row seat to the Pacific Ocean as we vacationed in San Diego. Nothing displays the power and majesty of the Lord like the ocean. It’s roaring sound, abundant sea life, along with its ebb and flow, are mesmerizing.
The ocean’s force is often unforeseeable. Yet at the same time, the ocean is also predictable in many of its patterns. For instance, each day there is high and a low tide. Tides are known, documented, and expected. Similarly, in my spiritual life, when I truly know God, I can be 100% sure that He is faithful, true, holy, just, gracious, merciful, kind, and loving.
“Oh, that we might know the Lord! Let us press on to know him. He will respond to us as surely as the arrival of dawn or the coming of rains in early spring.” Hosea 6:3
The Surety of God
God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. As the following song suggests, we can depend upon Him as surely as the dawn rises each morning and the spring rains cover the earth.

But how can I know God? Fact-finding is a start, but that merely fills my head with knowledge. Granted, to know someone requires spending time together. It involves intimacy and a heart connection. A familiar idiom says that knowing God is the fifteen inches between the head and heart.
How To Press On
To press on is to purposely pursue God. With determination and perseverance, I actively seek out God. It requires continual effort, moving forward, and never giving up. I want to follow God and chase Him down. He, in turn, will reveal Himself to me and make Himself known.
The prophet Jeremiah was intent in knowing God. May I have that same desire.
You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah: 29:13
Oh That We May Know the Lord
To Press On To Know the Lord is an act of wonder, exploration, and worship.
“But let him who boasts boast about this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the LORD.” Jeremiah 9:24
Prayer:
God of heaven and earth, I want to know You. May I continue to press into You. Amen.
Question to Consider:
- What are you doing to actively pursue God?
- Join me in committing to discover something new about God today.
