I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day

Peace on the Earth, Good Will To Men

Last week, there was another school shooting.  I can’t imagine the grief and confusion in the hearts of this mourning school community in Madison, Wisconsin,  just one week before Christmas. What is wrong with this world?  While I am reflecting on this tragedy, the century-old Christmas carol, I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day by Henry Longfellow pops up on my screen.  My eyes are drawn to the stanza, Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men.  Oh, how I long for these words to be true in our world today.

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day

This famous Christmas carol begins:

I heard the bells on Christmas day

Their old familiar carols play,

And wild and sweet

The words repeat

Of peace on earth, good will to men!

The words of the song reflect a sweet sentiment.  But are they accurate?

Despair Confronts Us

As I continue reading, the third stanza of the song glares back at me and seems to summarize the world we live in.

And in despair I bowed my head:

“There is no peace on earth,” I said,

“For hate is strong

And mocks the song

Of peace on earth, good will to men!”

Satan Mocks God’s Plan

Yes, Satan is attempting to mock God’s plan for peace and good will. Considering the current condition of the world, I’d say He’s working overtime.  Even so, we know Who will ultimately be victorious.  As we celebrate Christmas Day, we are reminded that Jesus came to save this lost world.

Peace on the Earth, Good Will to Men

Interestingly, the ringing of the bells reminded Longfellow of the truth of God’s deliverance.  Similarly, may God’s Word be a reminder for me.  My hope lies in Jesus, my Savior, Redeemer, and Lord.

Here’s the final stanza:

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:

“God is not dead; nor doth he sleep!

The wrong shall fail,

The right prevail,

With peace on earth, good will to men!”

Dear Lord, thank you that Christmas Day begins hope.  Amen.

Questions to Consider

  1. How do you stay encouraged considering the tragedies of everyday life?
  2. The Christmas bells reminded Longfellow that God is alive and working.  What reminds you of this reality?

That’s amazing that we were both thinking about that song. Some of the oldest Christmas carols have the best words. Thanks for your ongoing encouragement Mandy! Love you! Merry Christmas!
