Stand Firm in the Gospel of Peace
Our daughter works for Nike, a company famous for its athletic shoes. Nike has a shoe for every sport imaginable and uses the motto, Just Do It! Nike’s shoes are designed to help athletes perform at their best.
Interestingly, the Christian life also features unique footwear with a powerful slogan: Stand Firm in the Gospel of Peace.
The Armor of God
In the book of Ephesians, the apostle Paul writes about shoes when he describes the Armor of God. This armor helps believers as they face the battles of life.
For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News and be fully prepared. Ephesians 6:15
How to Stand
Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground. Ephesians 6:13-14
The key phrase here is Stand Firm. Paul repeats it again and again in this passage. The idea is not just about standing still–but standing strong, grounded, and unshaken in Christ.
Preparing for the Day
Every morning, I scan my closet for the right pair of shoes to wear. Will I be working in the garden, going on a hike, or dressing up for something special? My shoes depend upon my clothing and activity.
But here’s a better question. Do I consider that I am called to Stand Firm in the Gospel of Peace today? Am I spiritually ready with the proper footwear?
Footwear with a Purpose
The shoes that Paul describes in Ephesians are called caligae and were worn by Roman soldiers. These were heavy-duty sandals, made from a single piece of thick leather and strapped up the ankle. The soles of the caligae had hobnails, like cleats, to help soldiers stay steady in difficult terrain. They were designed for stability and traction, even when the enemy attacked.
This is what Paul means when he says, Stand Firm. It’s a military term, meaning immovable, planted, grounded, to dig in, and refuse to move.
Stand Firm in the Gospel of Peace
So what is the Gospel of Peace? It’s not just a comforting feeling or a moment of calm. The Gospel of Peace is a person.
Jesus is our peace.
In a world filled with conflict, confusion, and chaos, Jesus offers us something unshakable–Himself. When I walk with Jesus, His peace anchors me because He is the Prince of Peace, (Isaiah 9:6). Therefore, Jesus is the firm foundation that allows me to Stand Firm.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, as I choose my shoes each day, remind me to put on the Gospel of Peace. Help me to Stand Firm in Your strength and stay grounded in Your truth. Let Your peace protect my heart, guide my steps, and steady me through every challenge. Amen.
Questions to Consider
- How do you prepare to Stand Firm?
- Is Jesus your peace? How have you experienced that peace in your life?
