Waiting- an Act of Worship

Oh, how we hate to wait for anything – a traffic light, our fast food, an answer to a question, for our phone to charge.  We are an instant society.

So often in prayer, we do not receive an immediate answer.  Again, we must wait.  Because we are impatient people, our time and patience are stretched. However, could there be benefits to waiting?  Have you ever considered that waiting could be an act of worship to the Lord?

Waiting is the distance between promise and fulfillment

When I look at God’s Word, waiting and hope are often mentioned simultaneously.  Other action words, such as trust, expectation, strength, and courage, are connected to waiting.

Waiting means to stay with God.  Don’t give up.  Allow God time to answer.  Waiting is the distance between promise and fulfillment.  The promises of God are both here and on the way.

Waiting- an Act of Worship

Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!  Psalm 27:14

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope.  Psalm 130:5

I will wait for the Lord, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him.  Isaiah 8:17

But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.  Isaiah 40:31

Waiting isn’t passive at all!  Waiting is an act of worship.  Our waiting is a sweet offering to the Lord.

We serve God as we wait upon Him

David Guzik, a Bible commentator, says that while we wait, we should consider the duties of a waiter.  A waiter is serving the guests, meeting their needs, making them feel welcomed, and honored.  In the same way, we should be serving the Lord, while we wait upon Him to answer our prayers. https://youtu.be/oTZDcvw8v0Y?si=F_TbU9nZ2hpJwzDe

Dear Heavenly Father, help me see waiting as an opportunity to bring honor to You!  It is not an unimportant, waste of time.  By waiting, I am worshipping You!  You are faithful God.  So, I wait with eager hope and anticipation.  Amen.

Questions to Consider:

  1. What are you waiting for right now?
  2. How can you serve the Lord as you actively wait for an answer?

    1. Thanks for the encouragement Theresa! Probably much of what I write about is familiar to you, since we it comes from thoughts from our Bible Study together! I love how we can practice “iron sharpening iron”.
